And we know (we know it even if we don’t feel it) that in all things (even the ones we can’t even fathom being used for good) God works for the good. (He works for the good. Our job is to walk with Him day by day. His job is to work the good.) - Romans 8:28

...Trying to remember today (and everyday) that God is in the business of LOVE. He loves us. He cares for us. He wants what is best for us, even if we do not think it is best for us at the present time. Try and reflect back on a time where God did something in your life that you thought was completely wrong and you were not happy with it. Look where you are today... was it for your good that He did what He did? You will be surprised.... :) I know that I am astonished today as I reflect back on everything that God has brought me through ( all the struggles, heartaches, issues) to bring me to where I am today. And He is not finished with me yet! Same goes for you :)

Grace and Honor to Him,

So was Jesus

Hey lovelies! I got this from a devotional website and thought I would pass it along! GREAT inspiration for the day.

"Your soul's business is in the hand of a High Priest who can be touched with the feeling of your infirmities...He well knows that world through which you are struggling, for He dwelt in the midst of it thirty-three years. He well knows 'the contradiction of sinners', which so often discourages you, for He endured it Himself (Heb. 12:3). He well knows the art and cunning of your spiritual enemy, the devil, for He wrestled with him in the wilderness. Surely with such an advocate you may well feel bold.

Are you alone in the world, and neglected by those who ought to love you?

So also was Jesus.

Are you misunderstood, misrepresented, slandered and persecuted?

So also was Jesus.

Do you ever feel great agony and conflict of mind? Do you feel in darkness as if God has left you?

So did Jesus.

It is impossible to conceive a Savior more suited to the wants of man's heart than our Lord Jesus Christ--suited not only by His power, but by His sympathy--suited not only by His divinity, but His humanity...[He] is the most loving and sympathizing of friends, as well as the mightiest and most powerful of Saviors....you want no comfort...so long as you can repose your weary soul on the Man Christ Jesus." ~J.C. Ryle, Holiness, pp.240-242

Love Letter

"We love him, because he first loved us." 1 John 4:19

If that doesn't get you excited then I don't know what WILL! God loves us first- remember that and take some time to meditate on that. God loved me for eighteen plus years before I loved Him. He was so patient with me, so gentle with me and yet so jealous for me. I am so thankful that He rescued me from what I deserve. He loves me and has always loved me. He loves you and He has always loved you, even before the beginning of time! WAY before you were even born. Psalm 139 says,13 "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb." You have been created and made and thought-out and planned with LOVE. An agape love which only God can give. Listen to the words of this video and be moved.... it will change and stir your heart- promise. Oh yeah and ONE more thing :) Scroll down to the bottom of my page and pause the music player so you can hear the video above! Thanks you all!

be blessed, always

"The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise." Psalm 51:17

God will never despise your broken and contrite spirit. If that is not the best news in the world....! God is eagerly awaiting you to come to Him with your brokenness, with your pain, with your 'hidden' sin, with your anger.. God wants it all. Think about the parts of your life that you have not fully surrendered to God. What are they? Why are you keeping them from your Savior? I struggle with this on a daily basis. I LOVE to take things into my own hands and do things my way. But what I have been convicted of lately is that, oh hey Emily? God knows it all. God knows that you're not fully giving your relationship up to Him. If I could just humble myself before the Lord and be honest with Him, how refreshing would that be. God already knows, we have not fooled Him! God already knows our hearts. To confess our sins and our hurts will be relieving... it is like SUCH a weight is lifted off of your shoulders. God is there to help and to guide. Go to Him with your brokenness and ask Him for faith. Ask Him for belief. I am constantly reminded of the saying, "Lord I believe, help my unbelief." Give it all up to Him. After all, He is the author and the perfecter of our faith. "Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." Philippians 1:6

love you all,

"The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing." Zephaniah 3:17.

Yall, no lie..this verse has followed me everywhere this past week. I feel as if either someone mentions it, I flip to it in my Bible, we talk about it at school (I go to Seminary- how cool is it to be able to pray and read His Word in class?!), or I see it on a blog. It's time I give credit where credit is due, and write about this incredible truth! First off, it's in Zephaniah- a book I really had never read! If you know anything about this particular book in the Bible, it is definitely not the most joyful one. It's actually quite harsh! But there is such beauty and grace in this verse. God is so cool like that :)

The first sentence alone is absolutely incredible. Take the time right now wherever you are and meditate on the TRUTH that the Lord, the One who is YOUR God, is with you. He is with you right this very second. And the cool thing? He has never left you. In fact, He has stayed by your side through it all. He promises us that He will never leave us, even when we contemplate leaving Him (i.e. - when we do not trust in Him, when we do not allow Him to guide us... etc.) Even so, He takes DELIGHT in us! He has called us out us darkness and into His perfect light... He has reached down into that pit that we were in and put us on solid ground. Now here's the coolest thing: He calls us His very own. We have been adopted into His royal family and we are heirs with Jesus, His very own dearly beloved perfect sinless son. He delights in us... he is proud to be our Father. He quiets us with His love. Think about that for a minute. Have you ever had one of those horrible days where nothing seems to be going right? Do you remember praying through those trials and asking God to guide you and lead you through? Enter: His perfect peace. One of the most amazing things about our Lord is His peace that passes all understanding. God is the only being that has the ability to love us SO much that He would grant us grace through His peace that shows us His love through the stressful times. He loves us, yall. In fact, He loves you more than your daddy loves you, more than your husband loves you, more than your puppy dog loves you. God loves us no matter what. I don't know about you, but that really hits home for me. Because I know that my love that I have for people is not always infinite. I would find it so hard to love someone that has completely betrayed me and hurt me to the point of destruction. Yet what do we do to God on a daily basis? We have idols, we put things above Him and pile things on top of Him and eventually get to the point where we can forget He is even there. Scary, but the truth. BUT HE STILL LOVES US. Did you catch that? He STILL loves us. His love is a true love that is unconditional. It does not waver. He can still our hearts with His love! We serve such a mighty, awesome, incredibly superb God. I love verses like this... they give us a glimpse of Heaven... a glimpse of God and who He is and who He promises to always be. He will rejoice over you with singing, always. always. always. always. Remember that today- God is on your side and cheering you on- loving you completely, and taking GREAT delight in who you are and who He is refining you to be.

praying for yall! ,

this is short and sweet, but has really been on my heart lately.

how wonderful it is to know that I am a child of the King, that we as believers in Christ are co-heirs with Him. He holds us through it all and in it all. He is the One that keeps us going every single day. It is the Lord Jesus that has forgiven us for ALL of our sins- past, present and future. He has washed me clean. My sins had left a crimson stain and HE washed them white as snow. That absolutely blows my mind. An undeserving, wretched, messed up sinner like me is made righteous in God's eyes... through the work of Christ on the cross. I am forgiven. You have been forgiven through the shed blood of the sweet Savior Jesus Christ. Reflect on that and be still, knowing that He is God. He is good. He loves you so much :)

be blessed,

Ever have those incredibly selfish"me" days? You know, the days where everything seems to be spinning out of your control and you just want to scream at the top of your lungs and beg that God show you WHY He is letting your day go the way it is? It's like if things aren't going exactly the way you have them planned, then you pretty much have mini panic attacks. Welcome to my week thus far. Well, pretty much my week- since it's almost over. The pastor at my church has been teaching on the book of Galatians for the past month or so, going line by line, word by word, outlining what it truly means to have freedom in Christ. We as believers in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ have so many cool things going for us. Not only have we received eternal life with our Father in Heaven, but He has also given us so many blessings here on earth. One of them being our freedom! We are no longer slaves to this world. We are set apart and we are co-heirs with Christ! Since therefor we are set apart from this world, we have been given the gift of being freed from the world as we know it. This is not our home, thank You, Jesus! In Galatians 5:13 Paul is writing to the people in Galatia, discussing matters that were very prevalent to them. They had not quite grasped what it meant to have freedom in Christ. He clarifies:
"You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather,
serve one another humbly in love."
Galatians 5:13 (NIV)
We by no means should use our freedom to be selfish and to go back to the ways of this world- which are incredibly selfish and fleshy and gross and just overall horrible. Let's not forget that Satan is the prince of the earth, He is real and He is present, constantly tempting us and causing us to stumble. But who gets the victory at the end of all of this? God does! Jesus does! The Holy Spirit does! So then let's give our lives glory to God. Let's be free as we have been called to be. We need to serve one another humbly in love. That means that when we are having those "me" days where we just want to curl up on the couch with a gallon of ice cream and a sign that says "do not disturb", we need to rethink our agenda for the day. Have we served another? Have we loved on others? Have we put others before ourselves? Freedom is given so that we can serve, so that we can further the Kingdom of God! I found a list of things that may help you (and certainly have helped me) in evaluating the question: Alright God, in what areas do you want to free me from so that I can serve? Take a look:

When I am free from ambition, I am free to serve with a joyful heart.

When I am free from selfishness, I am free from irritation.

When I am free from jealousy, I am free to rejoice in the good of another.

When I am free from judgment, I am free to pray from a pure heart.

When I am free from expectation, I am free to enjoy whatever comes.

When I am freed from controlling others, I am free to see the miraculous.

When I am truly free, I will see the Kingdom of God in my life.

The Truth is in the Handbag

Shari Braendel

"Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of your name lead and guide me." Psalm 31:3 (NIV)

I recently watched as a frazzled shopper fumbled around in her bag trying to find her allusive keys. As she dug through her overstuffed purse, multiple items spilled out, landing on the counter and falling to the floor. Quickly, she began collecting her items.

I thought about her pretty purse, beautiful on the outside but hiding an unruly mess on the inside. And then I started thinking about how alike women and purses can be.

Maybe you're like a small purse that only has the capacity to hold a few things. Yet you try stuffing more into your life than you can hold, only to get frustrated. Perhaps one of those things is God: He's been crammed into a tiny space in your world and you don't give Him much room to rule because you feel more comfortable when you are in control.

Perhaps you're like a big purse, carrying all kinds of things. You're involving yourself in so many activities just because you can; with no real purpose to why you're doing it. You end up flustered like the shopper digging for her keys because you haven't spent the time needed to organize your spiritual life.

I know you're not a handbag, but when applying biblical truth and application, what kind of purse are you most like?

It's not God's desire for our inside to be out of sync with our outside. He desires for us to have our hearts turned toward Him and have our very pulse in beat with what He is doing in us.

Where should we start to curb the chaos, release our controlling tendencies and lighten the busyness to fall in step with God?

Start by being still. For some, that will go against every fiber of your being, but try it. Perhaps you abide in chaos because it's masking what is really going on with you, just like your pretty purse hides the unorganized mess within. Sit quietly and pray for God to help you be keenly aware of Him. Nothing that you are going through is a surprise to God.

Next, relax and trust the Lord. Sometimes feeling out of control causes you to hyper-control everything around you. Let go of your fears, doubts and worries and make room for God in your life.

Finally, clear your calendar. We overbook and over-schedule out of habit and now busy feels normal. Is your fast pace driven by fear, or does it define your value or identity? If so, re-evaluate where your time and energy are being spent and why.

Making a change doesn't come easily, but it can be done. Although seeking out time with God, learning to trust Him, and reorganizing your priorities can feel uncomfortable and difficult at first, I know for sure that it's not nearly as hard as living overcommitted and out of control.

Together, let's commit to cleaning out our "purses!"

Dear Father, will You please meet me right here, right now and quiet my heart so that I can rest and regroup? Thank You for the comfort of knowing that while I sometimes get waylaid, You never take Your eyes from me. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Bono Interview: Grace Over Karma

(Excerpt from the book Bono: In Conversation with Michka Assayas)

Bono_Rose_Colored_GlassesBono: My understanding of the Scriptures has been made simple by the person of Christ. Christ teaches that God is love. What does that mean? What it means for me: a study of the life of Christ. Love here describes itself as a child born in straw poverty, the most vulnerable situation of all, without honor. I don't let my religious world get too complicated. I just kind of go: Well, I think I know what God is. God is love, and as much as I respond [sighs] in allowing myself to be transformed by that love and acting in that love, that's my religion. Where things get complicated for me, is when I try to live this love. Now that's not so easy.

Assayas: What about the God of the Old Testament? He wasn't so "peace and love"?

Bono: There's nothing hippie about my picture of Christ. The Gospels paint a picture of a very demanding, sometimes divisive love, but love it is. I accept the Old Testament as more of an action movie: blood, car chases, evacuations, a lot of special effects, seas dividing, mass murder, adultery. The children of God are running amok, wayward. Maybe that's why they're so relatable. But the way we would see it, those of us who are trying to figure out our Christian conundrum, is that the God of the Old Testament is like the journey from stern father to friend. When you're a child, you need clear directions and some strict rules. But with Christ, we have access in a one-to-one relationship, for, as in the Old Testament, it was more one of worship and awe, a vertical relationship. The New Testament, on the other hand, we look across at a Jesus who looks familiar, horizontal. The combination is what makes the Cross.

Assayas: Speaking of bloody action movies, we were talking about South and Central America last time. The Jesuit priests arrived there with the gospel in one hand and a rifle in the other.

Bono: I know, I know. Religion can be the enemy of God. It's often what happens when God, like Elvis, has left the building. [laughs] A list of instructions where there was once conviction; dogma where once people just did it; a congregation led by a man where once they were led by the Holy Spirit. Discipline replacing discipleship. Why are you chuckling?

Assayas: I was wondering if you said all of that to the Pope the day you met him.

Bono: Let's not get too hard on the Holy Roman Church here. The Church has its problems, but the older I get, the more comfort I find there. The physical experience of being in a crowd of largely humble people, heads bowed, murmuring prayers, stories told in stained-glass windows

Assayas: So you won't be critical.

Bono: No, I can be critical, especially on the topic of contraception. But when I meet someone like Sister Benedicta and see her work with AIDS orphans in Addis Ababa, or Sister Ann doing the same in Malawi, or Father Jack Fenukan and his group Concern all over Africa, when I meet priests and nuns tending to the sick and the poor and giving up much easier lives to do so, I surrender a little easier.

Assayas: But you met the man himself. Was it a great experience?

Bono: [W]e all knew why we were there. The Pontiff was about to make an important statement about the inhumanity and injustice of poor countries spending so much of their national income paying back old loans to rich countries. Serious business. He was fighting hard against his Parkinson's. It was clearly an act of will for him to be there. I was oddly moved by his humility, and then by the incredible speech he made, even if it was in whispers. During the preamble, he seemed to be staring at me. I wondered. Was it the fact that I was wearing my blue fly-shades? So I took them off in case I was causing some offense. When I was introduced to him, he was still staring at them. He kept looking at them in my hand, so I offered them to him as a gift in return for the rosary he had just given me.

Assayas: Didn't he put them on?

Bono: Not only did he put them on, he smiled the wickedest grin you could ever imagine. He was a comedian. His sense of humor was completely intact. Flashbulbs popped, and I thought: "Wow! The Drop the Debt campaign will have the Pope in my glasses on the front page of every newspaper."

Assayas: I don't remember seeing that photograph anywhere, though.

Bono: Nor did we. It seems his courtiers did not have the same sense of humor. Fair enough. I guess they could see the T-shirts.

Later in the conversation:
Assayas: I think I am beginning to understand religion because I have started acting and thinking like a father. What do you make of that?

Bono: Yes, I think that's normal. It's a mind-blowing concept that the God who created the universe might be looking for company, a real relationship with people, but the thing that keeps me on my knees is the difference between Grace and Karma.

Assayas: I haven't heard you talk about that.

Bono: I really believe we've moved out of the realm of Karma into one of Grace.

Assayas: Well, that doesn't make it clearer for me.

Bono: You see, at the center of all religions is the idea of Karma. You know, what you put out comes back to you: an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, or in physics; in physical laws every action is met by an equal or an opposite one. It's clear to me that Karma is at the very heart of the universe. I'm absolutely sure of it. And yet, along comes this idea called Grace to upend all that "as you reap, so you will sow" stuff. Grace defies reason and logic. Love interrupts, if you like, the consequences of your actions, which in my case is very good news indeed, because I've done a lot of stupid stuff.

Assayas: I'd be interested to hear that.

Bono: That's between me and God. But I'd be in big trouble if Karma was going to finally be my judge. I'd be in deep s---. It doesn't excuse my mistakes, but I'm holding out for Grace. I'm holding out that Jesus took my sins onto the Cross, because I know who I am, and I hope I don't have to depend on my own religiosity.

Assayas: The Son of God who takes away the sins of the world. I wish I could believe in that.

Bono: But I love the idea of the Sacrificial Lamb. I love the idea that God says: Look, you cretins, there are certain results to the way we are, to selfishness, and there's a mortality as part of your very sinful nature, and, let's face it, you're not living a very good life, are you? There are consequences to actions. The point of the death of Christ is that Christ took on the sins of the world, so that what we put out did not come back to us, and that our sinful nature does not reap the obvious death. That's the point. It should keep us humbled . It's not our own good works that get us through the gates of heaven.

Assayas: That's a great idea, no denying it. Such great hope is wonderful, even though it's close to lunacy, in my view. Christ has his rank among the world's great thinkers. But Son of God, isn't that farfetched?

Bono: No, it's not farfetched to me. Look, the secular response to the Christ story always goes like this: he was a great prophet, obviously a very interesting guy, had a lot to say along the lines of other great prophets, be they Elijah, Muhammad, Buddha, or Confucius. But actually Christ doesn't allow you that. He doesn't let you off that hook. Christ says: No. I'm not saying I'm a teacher, don't call me teacher. I'm not saying I'm a prophet. I'm saying: "I'm the Messiah." I'm saying: "I am God incarnate." And people say: No, no, please, just be a prophet. A prophet, we can take. You're a bit eccentric. We've had John the Baptist eating locusts and wild honey, we can handle that. But don't mention the "M" word! Because, you know, we're gonna have to crucify you. And he goes: No, no. I know you're expecting me to come back with an army, and set you free from these creeps, but actually I am the Messiah. At this point, everyone starts staring at their shoes, and says: Oh, my God, he's gonna keep saying this. So what you're left with is: either Christ was who He said He was the Messiah or a complete nutcase. I mean, we're talking nutcase on the level of Charles Manson. This man was like some of the people we've been talking about earlier. This man was strapping himself to a bomb, and had "King of the Jews" on his head, and, as they were putting him up on the Cross, was going: OK, martyrdom, here we go. Bring on the pain! I can take it. I'm not joking here. The idea that the entire course of civilization for over half of the globe could have its fate changed and turned upside-down by a nutcase, for me, that's farfetched

Bono later says it all comes down to how we regard Jesus:

Bono: If only we could be a bit more like Him, the world would be transformed. When I look at the Cross of Christ, what I see up there is all my s--- and everybody else's. So I ask myself a question a lot of people have asked: Who is this man? And was He who He said He was, or was He just a religious nut? And there it is, and that's the question. And no one can talk you into it or out of it.

Your Minor Inconvenience Is Not a "Cross to Bear"

"Let him who walks in darkness and has no light trust in the name of the Lord and rely on his God." Is. 50:10

He guides us through it all. But does He really? That is the question my mind has been wrestling with lately. Does our God guide us through even the little decisions in life? Is He there to show His provision even when we have no idea where to go? The answer to those questions can be summed up in one little three-letter-word: Yes. It is said by Os Guinness that it is here that "faith simply has to suspend judgment on what God is doing." Faith does not always know why. I can have faith in something and not necessarily know why I do. I have faith in that this chair that I am sitting in will not collapse, but I do not know exactly why (we are talking physics here, yuck.) Faith does not always know why, but it trusts God who knows why. Faith is trusting in Him- because He knows why. We do not trust God because He guides us--> We trust God and then we are guided. That first step is so essential. We trust God (and then we are guided). It is only after the acknowledgment of trusting God that we are guided. But just get what this means: we can trust God even when we do not seem to be guided. Can I get an amen? That is exactly what I have needed this past month or so. I do not exactly feel as if I am being guided anywhere specific... I know that I am still in college and have a lot of credits to finish before I graduate, but I just feel as if I need to have it all in order now. I want to know when I will get married, when I will finish school, what type of job I will have after I graduate, where I will live.... the list is endless, people. Maybe I am just the world's biggest worry wort of something, but I seriously worry about these things on a daily basis! Key word: WORRY! Worrying is not of the Lord, it does no good for my walk with Him. Worrying is a lack of faith! And what is it that I said up a few lines? We can trust God and have faith in Him even when we do not seem to be guided. He ultimately knows the whole sha-bang. He is orchestrating everything just the way He has planned it... and mind you, He planned this all before I was even born. And He did the same thing for you! So why is it so hard to trust and have faith in His perfect will for my life? Because it's not right in front of me. And that is where my selfish, fleshy self kicks in. Guinness hits the nail on the head when he says, "what God is doing may be a mystery, but who God is, is not." God is no mystery! He reveals himself to us every single day and He draws our hearts and our minds closer and closer to him through the process of sanctification as believers. If you are familiar with the story of Job in the Old Testament, you know that Job was an extremely successful man that got everything (almost literally) taken away from him. He still kept his faith in God. Crazy, yet so amazing. What an example. Check out these verses:

"Behold, I go forward, but he is not there,
and backward, but I do not perceive him;
on the left hand when he is working, I do not behold him;
he turns to the right hand, but I do not see him.
But he knows the way that I take;
when he has tried me, I shall come out as gold.
My foot has held fast to his steps;
I have kept his way and have not turned aside."
Job 23:8-11

March 6, 2011

We cannot keep doing the same thing, the same way, and expect something different to happen. Think about that for a second....apply it to circumstances in your life, isn't it true? I have come to the point where I am slowly starting to understand that God is the only one that gets me. He knows my heart. Scripture is so clear of that! 1 John 19-20: "This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything." He knows everything. If you only get one thing from reading this blog today, get this: He knows everything. He knows the desires of our hearts before we even know them! He knows the pain we are about to experience before we experience it. The cool thing about that? He has overcome the pain that we have yet to experience. He has the perfect remedy for the hurt. No one else can get us like God gets us. But the tendency in our lives is that times of our lives when we most need to pour something out, we have a tendency to pour something in. When we most desperately need to pour out our hearts to God because He knows whats best for us, we are so quick to replace Him with material objects... we replace him with relationships, food, drink, activity, images, ... we stuff things in. We have something that we know that we are just trying to hold down. We are too scared to give it up to God. We hesitate at the thought of talking to God about it. Instead of bringing it straight to the throne of Jesus, we will pour on top of it. We add things to it, am I right? We pile everything we can on top of it, to the point where we don't even see God in it sometimes. We forget to turn to God because we have covered Him up completely. As a girl, especially a girl in college with a job, two volunteer commitments and a relationship, I have plenty of emotions. Enough emotions that if you are lacking some, I would be glad to hand some over to you. kidding, sort of. But really, it is such a challenge for me to bring my emotions to God. Because I cover Him up with my tears, with binge eating, with my boyfriend, with my homework, with my family, with my books, with my life. How dare I. I want to get to the point where I can bring any emotion, no matter what it is, into the throne room of God and lay it on the table and cry out to my Father, "let Your Will be done." Our emotions are so toxic sometimes.. they eat us up. The lies of Satan can consume our thoughts. It is so important to remember that God gets the victory over Satan! God HAS the victory over Satan, and there has never been a time where God has NOT had victory over anything. Toxic emotions need to be poured out freely before the throne of Grace. Lets not forget that God makes beauty out of ashes! It is honestly so true that sometimes we forget we are dealing with God- He listens to every single word you are saying and He knows all of your emotional upheaval. Next time you are tempted to pour in, what is it you need to pour out?
